You can pack a week in Guanacaste with activities, but you don't have to. If you are staying around Papagayo Bay, Playa Hermosa or Playas del Coco, the trick is to alternate bigger outings with slower days close to the water. Here is the itinerary we would give friends visiting for the first time: one base, a few early starts and plenty of room to change plans.

DAY 01

Arrive, unpack, settle in

After landing at Liberia (LIR), head to your accommodation and don't plan much more. Take a walk along Playa Panamá or Playa Hermosa, enjoy a relaxed dinner and get used to the pace of the coast. Hacienda Blu on Playa Panamá is one option for an easy first meal by the beach.

Keep the arrival day flexible. Delayed flights and tired travelers are not the best start to a packed itinerary.
DAY 02

Find the little beaches

Instead of heading straight for the famous beaches, spend a day discovering the smaller ones around Coco and Hermosa. Playa Buena, Playa Bonita, Playa Calzón de Pobre and Playa Pez Vela are all worth looking into. Pick two or three rather than racing through all four: bring water, a picnic and time to enjoy the quiet. Road access, parking and sea conditions vary, so check the route before setting off.

A beach is not necessarily accessible by regular car. Ask locally about the best way in, and respect any access restrictions.
DAY 03

Head inland to Rincón de la Vieja

Change scenery for a day and explore the dry forest and volcanic landscape around Rincón de la Vieja. The Las Pailas trail takes you past steam vents and bubbling mud pots, a remarkable contrast with the Pacific coast. Start early, bring water and proper shoes, and leave the afternoon open for a leisurely stop on the way back.

A guided nature outing is another good choice if you would rather not drive. Check park opening days and book entry where required.
DAY 04

A free day, the local way

Sleep in, take your time over breakfast and browse the small shops in Playas del Coco for souvenirs. Later, head to Playa Hermosa for a sunset by the water. For dinner, try Ginger in Hermosa, The Lookout above Coco or one of the restaurants along Coco's beachfront. Coconutz is a fun choice when you feel like live music; check what's on that evening.

One evening, skip the restaurant entirely and arrange a private chef at your villa. A homemade breakfast with a chef is another lovely way to start a slow day.
DAY 05

Make it a waterfall day

Guanacaste has more to offer than the shoreline. Llanos de Cortés, near Bagaces, is a beautiful waterfall day out with a broad pool and relatively straightforward access. For something more adventurous, choose La Leona, a guided hike through a river canyon with swimming sections. Pick the outing that suits your group rather than trying to squeeze both into the same day.

La Leona requires a guide and advance planning. River conditions change after rain; confirm the route and suitability before booking.
DAY 06

Save the best for last: a day on the water

We've noticed that many guests leave their catamaran trip until the day before they fly home. It often becomes the highlight of their holiday, and a wonderful way to finish the week. Sail through Papagayo Bay, stop in a quiet cove, snorkel when conditions allow and enjoy a long afternoon on the water. There is no need to rush back into another activity that evening.

If the sea forecast looks better earlier in the week, swap this day with another. We'd always rather choose good conditions than follow a fixed schedule.
DAY 07

One last coffee, then home

Keep departure day simple: breakfast, a final look at the ocean and plenty of time to get to Liberia airport. If your flight leaves later in the day, a short beach walk or one last café stop is enough. No tight connections and no major excursions today.

Leave a generous buffer for traffic, returning a rental car and airport check-in.

Need a hand planning?

We can help arrange a catamaran trip, a private chef, guided waterfall visits and transportation, while leaving the rest of your week yours to enjoy.
