The good thing about staying around Papagayo is that family days do not need much planning. Some of our favorite beaches are naturally sheltered, and the best outings tend to be the simple ones: a calm morning on the water, a waterfall, or a good meal after a day outside. Here are the places and activities we would suggest to families visiting the area.
Four beaches we like for families
Playa Panamá, Playa Buena, Playa Pez Vela and Playa Nacascolo are our first choices with children. They sit in sheltered parts of the Gulf of Papagayo and are generally much calmer than exposed Pacific beaches. That makes them lovely for paddling and relaxed beach mornings, though wind, tides and local conditions always matter.
Why Nacascolo is special
Nacascolo deserves a little extra attention. Its water is often almost flat, and you may spot capuchin monkeys near the sand or hear howler monkeys in the trees along the forest walk toward the beach. There are public toilets at the beach access area and other maintained facilities; check what is open on the day. During the dry season, the Papagayo winds can pick up in the afternoon, so we usually recommend going in the morning.
A morning on a private catamaran
For families, we usually recommend a morning charter rather than an afternoon one. The sea is often more comfortable before the wind builds, children have more energy, and a sheltered snorkeling stop can be an excellent first introduction to the underwater world. A private outing also lets us adjust the pace to the youngest person aboard.
A four-hour family fishing trip
A shorter inshore fishing trip can be a brilliant alternative for children who love being on the water. Depending on conditions and experience, the crew might use trolling to target jacks, mackerel or blackfin tuna, or jigging for bottom species such as snapper and grouper. Nothing is guaranteed, but the excitement of a bite is part of the fun.
Surf lessons reached by boat
For children who want to try surfing, Playa Iguanita is an option we particularly like, with lessons timed around suitable waves and tides. Playa Prieta may also be considered when conditions and instruction are appropriate. These outings can involve a boat transfer and should be arranged with a qualified instructor who can adapt the lesson to each child.
A waterfall day: Cortés or La Leona
Llanos de Cortés is a beautiful change of scenery after a few days at the beach. For active families with older children, the guided La Leona waterfall hike is another memorable option, with river crossings and a more adventurous route. They are different outings, so we would choose based on the children's ages and comfort walking on uneven, wet terrain.
A movie in Playa Hermosa
Not every family activity has to be an excursion. Playa Hermosa has a small cinema, a useful option for a quiet afternoon or when the weather is less cooperative. Check the current schedule for films suitable for children and enjoy a few hours out of the sun.
Burgers, chicken wings and live music
For a casual evening around Playas del Coco, we like Buzzed Monkey for its generous burgers and Coconutz for its chicken wings. Both can be fun places to catch live music when performances are scheduled. It's an easy way to end the day without booking another formal activity.
Rincón de la Vieja for curious older kids
If your family enjoys walking and nature, Rincón de la Vieja offers a very different landscape from the coast. The Las Pailas trail passes geothermal features such as bubbling mud pots and steam vents. Plan for the heat, take plenty of water and stay on marked trails.
What makes family days easier
In the dry season, Papagayo winds can pick up during the afternoon. Choose calmer morning windows for boat days and Nacascolo.
Ask for correctly fitted child seats in advance and allow room for bags, beach gear and strollers.
Share the children's ages, swimming abilities and any seasickness concerns before choosing a boat, fishing or snorkeling outing.
A waterfall or surf day can be plenty. Leave some time for a slow beach morning, movie or pool.
Enjoy monkeys and marine life from a distance. Never feed wild animals or touch sea creatures.
